Day 3

It is 5:43 pm on Thursday April 17, and I am wrapping up the day at the office.  Today was a very slow day.  My boss is out of town on business, so I worked on some website stuff and waiting to see if he likes it or not.  The other staff members like the way I designed it, so hopefully it will get passed.  Other than that I made contact with the people that are doing our internet broadcast and I am in the early stages of getting that set up.  It is very similar to how I did it at school, so it should be breeze.

The other staff members had meetings throughout the day and I had to answer the phone and take messages.  It was just another part of the job, but it was kind of cool hearing what kind of calls they get in to the place.  That was pretty much all I did today.  Nothing special, but with my boss out of town there was not a whole lot of extra stuff I could do till he gets back on monday.

At times I feel like I should be doing more than I am at this job.  There is so much downtime now it is insane.  I find myself surfing the internet a lot, but so is everyone else working there.  I would rather get the website up to date, but no one here can say to go ahead, my boss has to approve it all and when he is away it is hard to get in touch.  He should email me tonight with the suggestions I gave him to improve the site.  So hopefully tomorrow I will be a lot busier.

Last night I did go to Buffalo Wild Wings.  I had a great time there as I had 4 TV’s right in front of me.  One had the Yankees/Red Sox, one had the Cubs game, one had an NHL Playoff game on, and the other had the Cardinals/Brewers game.  I love a place like that where I could watch all my sports at the same time.  If only I could have that in my room at the hotel, I would be set.

Well that is it so far.  Tomorrow is Friday and we have a staff meeting in the morning to go over some players and contracts.  It is pretty cool that I am able to sit in on this stuff.  I am really going to get the experience of being in a baseball front office.  I am really enjoying it and I can’t wait to see what will be happening in then next few weeks.

That is all for now, Hope everyone has a good day.

2nd day!!!

It is 5:47 on Wednesday April 16th, and I am finishing up my day of work.  So far today it has been a pretty easy day.  I learned how to update the website and I am currently working on fixing up our page that let’s sponsors know how to advertise with us.  It would have been done by now, but the site is having a server problem and I can’t upload the pictures.  Once that is fixed I can get that finished.

I also wrote my first press release today.  The team signed a player that was with them at one time in 2006.  It was cool getting to write my first one, but it was not anything really hard.  In fact it was almost like writing a radio report like I used to do.  So the transition so far has been easy.

Other than that I have just been doing other little things.  The job does have some downtime since the server isn’t working.  That is my main project till the season starts, so at times I get to surf the internet and stuff.  I feel like I am not doing much but my boss just tells me to sit tight and when he has something for me, he will give it to me.

Tonight I plan on going to dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings.  Hopefully they get the MLB package and I can watch the Cubs game.  If not there should be some good sports on, so I can watch something.  The hotel is still very nice to be at.  I have yet to eat there but I think I will do that tomorrow.  But other than that stuff, I really just go to work at the park and then go to the hotel because I am tired.  This job does take some work and it gets tiring.

Well, Go Cubs!!!!  Have a good time everyone

First Day

It is 6:39 pm on Tuesday April 15th, and I have finished my first day on the job.  It was a good first day and I was busy for the most part.  I started off by meeting the General Manager Jose Melendez.  He went over everything I was going to do while I was down there.  His first assignment for me was to update our teams schedule with all the promotional events for the year.  It was pretty easy work because the system to put it on the website is really easy.  It took a while though because you had to put things in over and over again.

Then next I updated a new player that they signed on the website.  I also had to create a file for me on the website.  If you go to www.laredobroncos.com and click on front office you will see my name and you can click on it and read a bio on me.  it is pretty cool that i get put in there.  It really makes you feel important.

Finally I started working on making a roster sheet for the team.  Putting down the players name, pos, where they are from, etc…  It is taking a while to do, so after I post this I am going to do some more work on it and then finish it up tomorrow.

The job is going to be demanding, but i am up for the task.  Everything needs to be done right away.  While it is rushed type of job, it is still a very laid back atmosphere at the office.  It is going to be a very enjoyable time and I can’t wait to continue.

Well that was what I did on my first day.  I will write again tomorrow on how day 2 went.  Have a good one everyone.

Day 3: Arrival

It is 12:21 pm on Monday April 14th, and I have made it to Laredo, Texas.  Sorry about the late post but I could not get an internet connection till today.  The drive yesterday was not bad at all as it was a 3 hour trip from where I stayed last night to Laredo.  Driving through Texas was not that bad until after San Antonio.  Between there and Laredo there is nothing.  It felt like I was driving throught Oklahoma again.

When I arrived in Laredo, it took me awhile to find my hotel.  There were a lot of one way streets and I couldn’t figure out which direction to go.  Finally, I figured drive towards the border since my hotel is right there and wouldn’t you know it, I found it.  It is a nice hotel and they do have pretty good sized rooms.  I am by myself right now, but sometime this week I will be moving to a new room with a roomate.  He is another intern so it won’t be that bad.  Just like living back in college again.

When I got settled in my room and everything, I turned on the Cubs game which was on TBS.  Nice to see them win besides the bullpen having their problems.  I am happy they are winning these extra inning games, because at this time last year they were losing them.  I also watched the Red Sox Yankees game that night.  it was a long game but the Yankees lost.  I really question a move by Girardi in the 8th inning.  The Yanks are down 7-5 and they have 1st and 2nd no out with Johnny Damon up.  I think he should have bunted but he decided to swing away and Damon grounded into a dp killing the rally.  I know they don’t like the sac bunt in the AL, but I still thought they should have used it there.

Also yesterday I met one of the Coaches from the team.  His name is Jon Hinkel and he is the 3rd base coach, pitching coach, and hitting coach for the team.  He is a very nice guy and he told me his uncle was former Cubs interim manager Bruce Kimm.  Thought that was interesting.

Being so close to Mexico is really an eye opener for me.  I could throw a rock from the U.S. to Mexico easily.  That is how close I am.  I also noticed some people wading in the river looking like they were trying to see if they could cross.  Don’t know if they did, but I highly doubt it since there were numerous cars driving around the area that said U.S. border patrol on it.

Well tomorrow I start my job and I am really looking foward to it.  I don’t know exactly what I will do today, but relaxing is one of them for sure.  I may post later tonight or wait till after my first day tomorrow.  Hope everyone is doing well.

Day 2: On The Road

It is now 6:42 pm on April 12th and I am sitting in my hotel room in San Marcos, Texas.  I am waiting on a Papa John’s pizza.  Last night I sat in my hotel room and just watched some TV and did stuff on the internet.  I ended up going to bed around 2 am and woke up at 8:15 to begin my 2nd day.

The majority of the day was spent in Oklahoma.  It is a very boring state.  Nothing but fields all over the place.  Also a lot of casinos there too, which might be helpful on my way back home.  Haha.  I also passed the hometown of Carrie Underwood who won American Idol in 2005.  Also, I saw a billboard in OK, that stated it was the first state to put in a parking meter.  Hmm didn’t know that, and didn’t know it was that big of a deal.

Then after awhile I hit the state of Texas.  Of course there was a sign the minute I got in there saying proud home of President George W. Bush.  Now going back to seeing the sign of Carrie Underwood, I thought which one will people more actually be proud of.  I think Carrie Underwood would be the right choice.  What do u think?

The first city I got to was Dallas.  It was a nice city.  I saw where the Dallas Stars and Mavericks play which was cool.  Other than that I didn’t see much of Dallas.  Then I hit Austin after awhile and there is a lot of cool places there as I drove by.  The facilities of the University of Texas were amazing and huge.  Very nice place to go to college.

I am watching the Cubs now.  At the moment they are losing 2-0 in the 3rd.  Hopefully that will change.  This time tomorrow I will be in Laredo.  I will probably have a day and half or so to see what is around there.  I am excited.  Well till next time, have a good one.

Day 1: On The Road

Hello everyone.  It is currently 7:32 pm on Friday April 11th.  I have made my stop for the night in Joplin, Missouri.  I am only a few minutes away from Oklahoma so it has been a good first day trip wise.  I left at about 10 am this morning from my house as my Mom, Sister, Grandparents, and Uncle John saw me off.  It was a very emotional morning for me because I have always been around family and it was sad to know that I am going to be far away from them.  I knew this was going to happen at some point in my life, but I guess I never knew what it would actually feel like to leave home for my new job.

The trip itself was uneventful, which is a good thing.  I had no trouble with traffic or anything till I got to my least favorite city on Earth, which is St. Louis.  I know everyone thinks that I hate the city because of the sports teams, (which I do) but I also just think there is not much to offer as a city.  I know they have some nice areas, but it never appealed to me.  Oh well, I am not going to cry over that. HAHAHA  There was backup there due to a sharp curve on the ramp but other than that it was smooth sailing.

One more thing I have to complain about is the drivers in Missouri.  Once you get past St. Louis the expressway opens up to 70 mph.  Yet, I found myself constantly in the left hand lane going 60 or 65 because of morons driving.  If the speed limit is 70…. GO 70!!!!!!  My friend Katie once remarked to me that people that are not from Chicago sometimes think we drive too fast.  Well, now I think we drive fast but people from Missouri are slower. (sorry for all you reading this that live in Missouri)

I am at the Super 8 Hotel for the night and decided to have dinner at Applebee’s.  It was a good dinner as I had a appetizer trio of mini cheeseburgers, boneless bbq wings, and cheesesticks.  It was weird sitting at a restaurant like that alone.  I have never really done that before and I really felt like talking to someone but couldn’t.  It was a little frustrating.

Well that is all I got for tonight.  I hope you will keep on reading, because these posts will get better once I actually start my job.  I plan on updating tomorrow as well, but that all depends if I can get internet access at my next hotel.  Well till the next time.  Have a good one!!

Hi everyone!!

With me beginning a career in broadcasting baseball, I thought it would be a neat idea to blog about life in the minors.  I hope you enjoy finding out a little bit about baseball life, as much as I am going to enjoy working in it.
